Upright vs. Canister Vacuums

Upright vs. Canister Vacuums

Vacuum cleaners are one of the most important appliances in the home. Regardless of the size your apartment, a vacuum cleaner is sure to come in handy in keeping the house free from dust, dirt and even allergens.

However, not all vacuum cleaners are constructed the same and chances are not all vacuum cleaners will deliver excellent performance in your home. It’s pretty obvious that they basically operate on the same mechanism, but you may discover that one type will work best for you, while the other may not function at all. So what are these types?

Today there are so many kinds of vacuum cleaners. Vacuums can be categorized as to whether they are bagged or bagless.

However, our focus here will be on another two broad categories of vacuum cleaners: upright vs. canister vacuums. Which one should you get? Which one will be more efficient for your home?

Which Vacuum Cleaner is Best for You?

We are going to compare them in terms of size, efficiency, and cost. Then we’re going to round it up with a summary of Pros and Cons so you can make the right decision based on your needs.

Vacuum Cleaner Size

Just as the name implies, upright vacuum cleaners are the types which stand upright. They are the taller and more traditional units that are built to push along a wide floor. Upright vacuum machines look more like a broom which have a long handle above (where the bag is located) and a suction pump that lifts up dirt and dust from the floor.

On the other hand, canister vacuum machines are known to be smaller, lighter and more compact that upright models. It comes with a long flexible hose and wand linked to a wheeled barrel that houses the machine’s motor (coupled with the bag for some models). It also comes with a lightweight head that is designed to reach the tightest areas or spaces of your home.

Vacuum Cleaner Efficiency

Both the Upright and Canister Vacuum cleaners are effective in getting rid of dirt and dust from the floor. However, while the both models utilize suction in cleaning, they are constructed to be efficient in different areas of cleaning.

Firstly, the upright vacuum is built to be able to clean a wide space in the shortest period of time. It is also very effective in cleaning all forms of carpeting but is not so much useful for hard floors. Upright vacuum cleaners also come in handy at times when you need to clean the hard-to-reach areas under furniture. Today some models feature hose extensions up to 15 feet which are ideal for homes with very high ceilings.

Modern vacuum cleaners also come with self-propelled motors, wide cleaning paths, and dirt sensors. Moreover, most models come with several filter types and height adjustment features.

On the other hand, Canister vacuum machines due to their lightweight structure are more versatile than upright machines. They are specially built to reach every nook and cranny of your house with ease. It’s also handy when you need to carry the vacuum cleaner up and down the stairs thanks to its lightweight.

Canister machines also work best on hard floors, and some models have been improved to be effective in cleaning carpeting. They also tend to generate less noise as compared to upright vacuum cleaners.

You may also have to consider your health. For instance, if you’re someone who faces difficulty in carrying heavy objects, we suggest you go for a canister vacuum. However, if you happen to be suffering from back pains, it is recommended that you go for an upright vacuum machine as you won’t have to bend as frequently as when you’re using a canister model.

Vacuum Cleaner Cost

Generally speaking, upright vacuum cleaners are known to be more affordable than the relatively modern canister vacuum machines. An average upright vacuum machine may cost about $50, but if you want more features, you can go for top-notch ones that may cost over $1000. On the other hand, a regular canister vacuum cleaner can be three times costlier than upright models. An average low-end canister machine may cost between $150 to $2000 or higher.

Upright Vacuum Cleaners

  • An average upright vacuum cleaner tends to be more affordable than canister vacuum machines.
  • They can be stored away with ease. Upright vacuum cleaners can also be operated without preparations.
  • They come with wider cleaning path.
  • More efficient in cleaning thick carpets and rugs.

  • Upright vacuum cleaners tend to be noises than canister vacuum cleaners.
  • They are less effective in cleaning hard to reach areas of your house.
  • They tend to be heavy and difficult to drag throughout the house. Upright vacuum cleaners are also harder to carry in stairs.

Canister Vacuum Cleaners

  • Canister vacuums tend to stronger than upright vacuum cleaners. They come with better suction and flow-rate for faster and easier cleaning, especially for bare floors.
  • They have better flexibility and thanks to the hose, they are handier in cleaning stairs and other hard to reach spaces. They also tend to be easy to operate because you only have to move the wand and not the whole vacuum cleaner.
  • Canister vacuum cleaners are more compact and easier to carry.
  • They are more silent thanks to the extra room for a good canister sound insulation.

  • Canister vacuum cleaners cannot be operated immediately. This implies that you need to do some assembling before you can use them.
  • Canister vacuum cleaners are harder to store compared to upright vacuum cleaners.
  • Some folks don’t like to drag the canister behind them.
  • Another issue is that you to bend over when using a canister vacuum machine. This can be a problem if you have back pains.

All in all, upright vacuum cleaners are sure to work for carpet and rugs, and canister vacuum machines work best for bare floors. In essence, you should get an upright cleaner if your home is covered with carpets, and go for canister vacuum appliance if you have bare floors.

Overall, canister vacuum tends to have a better advantage over upright vacuum cleaners as they are more powerful, easier to handle and silent.

Also, a canister vacuum machine gets rid of dirt faster without much hassle. At the end of the day, it all comes down to a matter of preferences, so be sure to go with the machine that works best for your home.

How to Remove Wine Stains from Carpet

Remove Wine Stain

Are you face to face with a wine stain in the middle of your carpet? Do you want to attempt to remove the stain on your own?  Follow our DIY guide to remove wine stains from your carpet.

Wine is tasty and provides a nice little buzz when you need to relax. But, the more the wine flows, the greater the chance for a wine spill. As you get tipsy so does your glass of wine.

Wine Stain Removal Guide

Method 1:

If you catch the spill immediately blot, don’t rub, to soak up what you can. Pour some cold water over the stain and blot some more, then use salt to soak up what is left. Let the salt sit until it seems to be completely dry. Leaving it sit overnight is fine and will not hurt carpet fibers. Discard the excess salt by scooping it up with a spoon and then vacuum the area well. If a salty residue remains, soak the area with cold water and blot to dry. Avoid this area until the spot is completely dry to avoid attracting dirt.

Method 2:

In a large bowl, mix together 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water. Soak a clean rag in the mixture and gently dab the stain until carpet is well saturated. The cleaning solution will seep deep in the carpet fibers to loosen and break up the wine stain. Alternate by blotting with a clean, dry rag. Continue this process until the stain appears to be gone and then use a third clean rag to soak the area with fresh, cool water. Repeat the above steps until stain is no longer visible.

Method 3:

Mix a squirt of liquid dish soap with about ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide. Since hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent it is best to use only on light colored carpet or test the solution on an inconspicuous area of carpet before treating your wine stain. Soak a corner of a clean rag with the hydrogen peroxide solution and gently blot the stain. Apply enough solution to fully soak the entire stain and allow a few minutes for the solution to seep deep into carpet fibers. Now spray the area with cold soapy water, or if you do not have a spray bottle simply blot the area well with a clean rag saturated in soapy water. Be sure to rinse the area well with clean water and a clean rag to remove any soapy residue, because any residue left behind will attract dirt and cause discoloration.

Method 4:

Pour a little white wine onto your red wine stain to dilute the color and make the stain less visible. Avoid sweet, sugary wines like moscato and dessert wines, or use plain white vodka instead. Blot the stain lightly with a sponge to remove some of the red color and then create a baking soda paste by combining 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water. Spread the paste generously over the stain and cover with a clean rag. Place something heavy on top of the rag to allow deeper penetration and let it sit overnight. Then vacuum the area well in the morning. If any residue remains be sure to rinse with cold water, blot, and vacuum again.

Even if your wine stain appears to be completely removed, these DIY methods are rarely successful in removing all traces of the incident. Much of the time the wine penetrates too deeply into carpet fibers and pads to be fully removed by these methods. A combination of the four methods can be more successful, but the best way to remove wine stains from carpet is a professional carpet stain removal treatment.

Natural Cleaning with Vinegar

Clean with vinegar

Vinegar is most often used when cooking. It adds flavor to any dish. From balsamic, to apple cider, to red or white wine vinegar, they all have a distinctly sour flavor. Since vinegar is used often in cooking, you probably have some stashed away in your cupboard or pantry. Did you know that you can clean naturally with vinegar around your home?

Vinegar is effective against mold and mildew. It can also be used as a fungicide and as an antiseptic. Vinegar is a cheap, effective, and natural household cleaner.

So How Can You Clean Naturally with Vinegar?

  • To clean your garbage disposal or drain- pour half a box of baking soda down drain or disposal. Then pour white vinegar over baking soda and let it foam up. Let drain or disposal sit for a few hours before use.
  • To clean the microwave splatter- microwave a mixture of half water, half white vinegar for 2 minutes. Then use a sponge dipped in the mixture to wipe off hardened food. It will come right off without much effort.
  • To clean stainless steel appliances- use a spray bottle filled with undiluted white vinegar to spray directly onto surface. Wipe with a soft rag, with the grain. Follow with a clean rag and clean water to remove any residue.

  • To remove mold and mildew- combine 1 part vinegar with 1 part water. Use a sponge dipped in the solution to scrub moldy grout and tiles. You may need to use a little elbow grease to remove the mold stains.
  • To remove mineral deposits- fill a ziplock bag half way with white vinegar. Place bag over shower head or faucet and attach with a rubber band. Let soak for two hours. Remove bag and scrub shower head or faucet with a toothbrush to remove deposits.
  • To clean your toilet- dump a few cups of vinegar in toilet bowl before bed. Let it sit overnight. Scrub with a toilet brush in the morning. The vinegar will sanitize the toilet bowl and remove hard water stains.

Laundry Room

  • To clean your washing machine- dump a few cups of vinegar into washing machine tub and run on the hottest cycle. Use a rag or sponge dipped in vinegar to wipe around the door or lid. If it’s a front-loader, wipe around the rubber door seal. Also wipe the outside of the washing machine.
  • To remove stains from clothes- treat with vinegar by saturating stain with undiluted white vinegar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes, then launder.
  • To use as a fabric softener- add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This will give clothes the same static free, cling-free, soft feeling you get from a chemically heavy fabric softener.

How to Speed Clean Your Home

Speed clean your home

Sometimes there is no time for cleaning. No problem. Learn how to speed clean your home from our blog and get back to your busy schedule:

Time is something that we run short on, every day. Especially when it comes to cleaning, since that tends to rank pretty low on the list of things to do in your spare time.

So how can you get the job done quickly, efficiently, and decently? Speed clean your home!

Think of yourself as a hired cleaner, your time is money, or just think about how you will be able to relax in a clean home as soon as you are done. Whatever works to get you moving, and quickly. Focus and read these tips.

Tips to Speed Clean Your Home

  • First, to be sure you stay on top of things, schedule a regular, weekly time for your speed cleaning. Cleaning takes much longer, is more tedious, and is just plan grosser, when you’ve let the filth build for too long.
  • Now, make sure you have the proper tools for the job and carry them all with you, yes, all of the sponges, rags, mops, and cleaning solutions that you could possible need, and make sure the vacuum and garbage are close by at all times.  If you do not, a lot of your time will be wasted running back and forth and up and down stairs to retrieve needed items.
  • Get rid of all distractions. Have everyone out of the house, unless you are lucky enough to have help, then make sure your help is actually helping. Turn off all televisions and telephones. Make sure pets are distracted or in another area of the house. Or just start with the vacuum, this will usually cause most cats and some dogs to scatter in fear for their lives.
  • Don’t jump around. Focus on one area and finish it completely before moving on. For example, in the bathroom, start with the sink and complete it entirely, including the mirror, before moving on to the toilet; then the tub; then the floor. Finish the entire bathroom before moving on to the next room. It seems logical to vacuum the whole house right off the bat, but do only the room you are working on. This cuts down on the time wasted going back and forth between rooms.
  • Use both of your hands. Since most of us have one dominant hand, we tend to act like our other hand is useless. Well, guess what, it’s not. It may not be as strong as the other one, but it can scrub right along with its neighbor, or arm your non-dominant hand with the spray bottle so that you’re not constantly setting down and picking things up.
  • Finally, to make sure that you are set for next week’s speed cleaning session, put all cleaning supplies back in their place. It is best to keep them all together in an easy to carry and store tote. This way you will not have to search for, and gather all of your supplies each week.

So, how quickly can this speed cleaning thing be done, you ask? Well, that depends on the size of your house, if you have help, and your motivation level of course. So, get organized and set your timer. See how quickly you can get it done each week. Sync your Fitbit and see how many steps it takes you to clean your home. Then try to do it in less the next week. Oh, and it is perfectly acceptable to tell people that you worked out today if you

How to Declutter Your Home

Declutter Your Home

Do you really need all that stuff? Really? Learn how to declutter your home with helpful tips from our blog:

What is clutter? It is all the stuff you have laying around, hanging in your closet, sitting on shelves, or bursting out of drawers. These are things that you do not need or use. They can add stress to a person’s life and give a sense of disorganization.

Disorganization and clutter can make it very difficult to find things when you need them. Time is wasted and stress added to a day when you are running late and can’t find your keys.

If you’re like me, you typically rush out the door to get somewhere on time. The last thing you have time to do is search the closet for your favorite pair of shoes, or for the jacket that goes perfectly with your outfit.

If you declutter your home it can provide a sense of accomplishment and control. Many desire an uncluttered home but don’t know where to start.  It is best to begin slowly to avoid becoming overwhelmed.

Here are some tips to get you started.

Tips to Declutter Your Home

  • Start with five minutes and tackle one area, maybe a kitchen counter or a shelf.
  • Schedule times designated solely to decluttering and stick to them. It does not have to be long. Make slow and steady progress.
  • Designate a specific area, perhaps a basket or a file cabinet, for all papers- receipts mail, magazines, manuals. Paper accounts for a great deal of clutter and this one simple step can make a huge difference in how cluttered a home looks and feels.
  • Also create a separate box for all paperwork that you may or may not need, or might not need long-term, and go through this box often.
  • As you choose an outfit each day, make a habit of pulling out one item you do not wear.
  • As you create piles of clothes and household items to get rid of, donate them. Get them out of your house quickly or they can add to the clutter.
  • Avoid the urge to buy new things as your create more space in your home. This will just create clutter once again.
  • If you have children, teach them where things belong and have them clean up after themselves each day. They will not learn this habit overnight, but be persistent and patient and this will go a long way in limiting clutter.

As your home begins to look and feel more open, it’s a great time for some last minute spring cleaning.

Make sure you clean out all drawers and wipe all shelves completely. A clean home gives a sense of organization.

Once you declutter your home you can now vacuum in places you have not seen in a long time.  Perhaps take this opportunity to deep clean your carpets.

With nicer weather comes some not so nice insects!

It is important to protect yourself and your home from insect invaders like ants, earwigs, and houseflies.  The problem is that pretty much all bug repellents contain toxic chemicals that are not safe to inhale or on your skin.

We have provided a couple DYI bug replant recipes that 100% natural!

Herbs, Vinegar, and Water

Every home needs to have vinegar on hand. It is a great natural cleaner and is great for making your own bug repellant!

  • Fill a large spray bottle with white or apple cider vinegar about halfway.
  • Next, add your herbs. You can use lavender, catnip, sage, thyme or mint.
  • Then, fill it the rest of the way with water and shake well.
  • Let it sit overnight and the next day you will have a great natural bug repellant for your home!

  • Next, add your herbs. You can use lavender, catnip, sage, thyme or mint.

Vodka and Essential Oil

Houseplants that Repel Insects

In addition to these natural bug repellant sprays, you can also plant these bug-repellant plants in pots around your home.

Lemon Balm

This plant will repel mosquitos and as a bonus smells very amazing! The lemon-mint scent will make your home smell fresh and clean while repelling bugs.

  • This plant is very versatile but grows best in dry climates.
  • It is best to plant it in the early spring.

Catnip is more than just a treat for the family cat, it also has a natural chemical inside that repels many different insects. It is actually more effective that DEET, which is a common chemical in most bug repellant sprays. While you may repel bugs with this plant you may also attract neighborhood cats, which you will want to keep in mind if you plant it outdoors.

  • This plant is really hard to kill. It is very resilient but can be harmed by colder weather and frosts.
  • Plant indoors anytime or in the spring after the last frost outdoors.

Basil is great on pizza and in salads and smells amazing. If that’s not enough it also is a great insect repellant.  It gives an amazing scent even without its leaves being crushed. It is great in your home or outdoors!

  • Grow basil in the summer months. It needs a warm climate to do well.
  • Basil likes it warm, around 70 degrees for seedlings. You can use a plant light to keep them at the right temperature.

How to Remove Cat Dander from Your Home

Remove Cat Dander
source: http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/4-odd-cat-sleeping-habits-explained

We love our cats but you may not love that itchy feeling you get after petting your furry friend.

Many people believe that cat fur is what causes allergic reactions but it is actually cat dander that is the problem.

Cat dander can be finding all over your home. It clings to walls, carpet, upholstery, and clothing. If you or anyone in your home is prone to allergies due to cat dander it is important to know that it is impossible to completely remove all cat dander if you own a cat but you can significantly reduce it.

We have provided some tips to help remove cat dander from your home:

Wipe Down All Surfaces

To start, wipe down all surfaces in your home with hot water and multipurpose cleaner. We highly recommend a non-toxic green cleaning product that is safe for you and your pets.

Wipe down all surfaces, including walls, tables, baseboards, all surfaces you can think of!

Avoid dry dusting because this will only stir up cat dander and then it will settle in other areas of your home.

Clean Curtains and Furniture

Remove and wash all curtains according to their instructions. If this is not possible use your vacuum attachment nozzle to clean them.

Most cats love to lounge on your furniture, this means their dander is likely to be highly concentrated in the areas they like the most. Shampoo all upholstery, but be careful not to soak them, this will lead to mold and mildew growth.

It is highly recommended that you have your upholstery professionally cleaned at least once a year, especially if you have pets.

Vacuum Carpets

Cat dander loves to hide in the carpet. Be sure to vacuum frequently with a High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestin bag. These will prevent the dander from being sent back into the air during vacuuming sessions.

If your cat loves to snuggle on your lap, you will have a good amount of cat dander transferred onto your clothes.

Be sure to wash clothing frequently and use a lint roller for removing visible cat dander and fur.

Then wipe them down with a hypo-allergenic pet wipe to neutralize the allergic effects.

Stop Cat Dander at the Source

One of the best ways to reduce cat dander in your home is to stop it at the source! You can bathe your cat with a gentle shampoo every few weeks to reduce dander.

Brushing your cat often will help to promote the removal of dead skin cells. Just be sure to brush your cat in an area that you clean up soon after to prevent dander from spreading throughout your home.

Be sure to feed your cat a healthy cat food that is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. This will promote healthy skin and fur.

Take your cat to the vet for regular checkups to be sure that they are healthy and happy!

How to Remove Buffalo Sauce Stains

Remove Buffalo Stains
Spicy! Zesty! Tangy! Buffalo sauce is so delicious. But it can be a big mess too! Especially if it gets spilled on the carpet. We’re here to help. Learn our tips to remove buffalo sauce stains from carpet:

Crispy fried chicken covered in spicy sauce served with blue cheese and celery. Need we say more?

Yum! Yum! Yum!

Buffalo wings have become an American favorite.

Buffalo wings are perfect for parties, appetizers, bar food, watching sports and lunch or dinner.

Wings are in such high demand that they have actually become the most expensive part of the chicken. All thanks to the genius idea of frying them and covering them with buffalo sauce.

Buffalo wings are tasty but they are also extremely messy. It is almost impossible to eat buffalo wings without sauce ending up all over your hands, face or clothes.

The real tragedy is when buffalo sauce ends up on the carpet. You will want to remove buffalo sauce stains from carpet as soon as possible.

Before we get to the tips to remove buffalo sauce stains from carpet let’s talk about where the spicy treats come from.

There has been a lot of debate about who actually came up with the first buffalo wings.

Buffalo wings originate from Buffalo, New York. Not from buffalos.

OK. You knew that already.

One of the most popular theories is that buffalo wings were invented by accident in 1939.

The story goes that one evening Anchor bar owners Teressa Bellissimo and her husband Frank Bellissimo were expecting a delivery of chicken neck. They used the chicken necks to cook their spaghetti sauce.

A delivery of chicken wings arrived by mistake.

Instead of wasting the wings Teressa Bellissimo decided to turn them into a bar appetizer, resulting in the buffalo wings we know and love today.

Teressa cut each wing in half to produce a “drumstick” and a “flat”, that she deep fried without breading. Then covered them with hot sauce and served them with celery and blue cheese dressing.

When Teressa and Frank’s son Dominic took over the bar in the ‘70s he painted a bit more of a colorful tale:

“It was late on a Friday night in 1964, a time when Roman Catholics still confined themselves to fish and vegetables on Fridays…Some regulars had been spending a lot of money, and Dom asked his mother to make something special to pass around gratis at the stroke of midnight. Teressa Bellissimo picked up some chicken wings, parts of a chicken that most people do not consider even good enough to give away to barflies, and the Buffalo chicken was born.”

Regardless of how the story was told, buffalo wings became popular throughout the city within weeks.

Many people have claimed to be the inventor of the buffalo wing.

At least, we can all agree that regardless of who invented the buffalo wing they are delicious.

So, buffalo wings are pretty great but not so great on your carpet.

If while enjoying their saucy, fried goodness you end up spilling some on the floor you will want to follow our tips to remove buffalo sauce stains from carpet:

How to Remove Buffalo Sauce Stains from Carpet:

  1. Use a white napkin, paper towel, or cloth towel to blot as much of the sauce as possible. Do this as soon as possible to prevent the stain from setting deeper into your carpet.
  2. Mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with 2 cups of warm water.
  3. Using a clean white cloth sponge the stain. Be careful not to rub.
  4. Continue blotting, using a new clean cloth when needed.
  5. Using another clean cloth blot clean cold water onto the area. Be sure to remove all traces of soap. Soap left behind can attract dirt and become discolored.
  6. Dry the area with a clean cloth. Be sure to dry the carpet as much as possible. Carpet fibers left damp will attract mold and mildew.

If the stain has not come up here is an alternative method:

  1. Use a white napkin, paper towel, or cloth towel to blot as much of the sauce as possible. Do this as soon as possible to prevent the stain from setting deeper into your carpet.
  2. Mix a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water.
  3. Blot the solution onto the stain using a clean towel or cloth. Be sure to test a small area of carpet like in a closet to be sure the solution does not damage carpet fibers.
  4. Continue blotting the solution until the stain disappears. Be sure to always use the clean part of the towel or a new towel to prevent the stain from spreading.
  5. Blot the area with cold clean water and a clean cloth.
  6. Dry the area with a clean cloth. Be sure to dry the carpet as much as possible. Carpet fibers left damp can attract mold and mildew.
